Horace Suite: Transforming an Old Hong Kong Home into a Modern Living Space

A Unique Demonstration of Small Home Solutions with Transformable Zones

The Horace Suite project by Make It Works Ltd aims to revolutionize the concept of small living spaces in Hong Kong. By transforming a common 70s home setup into a modern Western-style apartment, the design showcases the possibilities of flexible living areas and the importance of natural light in enhancing spatial comfort.

The Horace Suite introduces a complete shuffle of zoning, deviating from the traditional layout commonly found in Hong Kong homes. The living area is strategically placed next to the entrance, while the kitchen and dining areas are situated on the sides with ample windows. This unique arrangement eliminates the need for corridors, creating a clean and bright space. The minimalist design, with its abundance of British windows, not only maximizes natural light but also gives the illusion of a larger, more spacious area.

One of the key features of the Horace Suite is the integration of storage and functional fixtures within the walls. This clever concealment not only adds to the minimalist aesthetic but also allows for larger room sizes and more functionality than what is typically expected from a 470 sq.ft. flat. The design utilizes a combination of black, white, oak, and concrete to create a bright and comfortable atmosphere.

The open kitchen in the Horace Suite is a focal point, wrapped in windows to maximize sunlight intake. It is equipped with built-in appliances such as a fridge, dishwasher, steam/microwave oven, and a 4-hob electrical cooker. The spacious kitchen also features a large bench, perfect for group cooking and gatherings. The marble tabletop adds a touch of luxury, embodying the high-end feel of the space.

With a total area of 470 sq.ft., the Horace Suite consists of a living room with an embedded working space and an extra bedroom, an open kitchen with a dining bench, a bathroom with laundry facilities, and a queen-sized bedroom with a full wall wardrobe and open shelves. The design caters to the needs of a single individual who enjoys hosting gatherings. The suite can be transformed into three modes, facilitated by the "living room transformer": a ready-to-work, cook, and rest single-user suite, a gathering place connected to the kitchen bar table, and a two-room suite formed with bi-fold glass panels.

The Horace Suite project was completed within a timeframe of three months, from November 2021 to January 2022. Located in Happy Valley, Hong Kong, the design team at Make It Works Ltd conducted extensive research to understand the common flow and characteristics of similar-sized flats in Hong Kong. They also studied international cases to explore different living flows and maximize the use of natural light.

The Horace Suite project presented several challenges, including finding a balance between functionality and a spacious feel within a limited space of 450 sq.ft. The complete shuffle of the layout required the redesign and restructuring of electrical and mechanical works, which involved continuous collaboration with the technical team and negotiation with the building management. Additionally, ensuring ample natural light penetration was crucial to brightening the space.

The Horace Suite is a testament to the transformation of an old Hong Kong home into a modern living space. By reimagining the zoning and incorporating innovative design elements, Make It Works Ltd has created a unique and functional apartment that showcases the possibilities of small home solutions. The project has been recognized for its excellence and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2023 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach.
